Kathmandu, Nepal – The Ministry of Health and Population, WHO and key partners observed the seventy-second World Leprosy Day to raise awareness about leprosy and advocate for the dignity and rights of those affected. With the theme, “Unite. Act. Eliminate.”, the event featured a march, presentations and panel discussions that highlighted Nepal’s progress in leprosy elimination and underscored the importance of early detection, social inclusion and the contributions of health workers, policymakers and communities in combating the disease. Partners advocated for the abolishment of discriminatory laws, such as the anti-marriage law affecting individuals with leprosy and emphasized the necessity of equitable healthcare services. The event reinforced the alignment of Nepal’s national leprosy program with WHO’s strategies, including scaling up active case detection, implementing post-exposure prophylaxis in high-endemic districts and conducting public awareness campaigns to eliminate stigma and discrimination. WHO remains dedicated to supporting these efforts, ensuring sustainable progress and Nepal’s commitment to a leprosy-free Nepal.
